Edge banding is a
process where an associated narrow strip of material used for creating durable
and aesthetically edges which are trim. This is a process used when the
carpentry is getting finished. It is used for covering the exposed sides of
materials which include particle board, plywood and Medium Density Fiberboard
(MDF). This method increases the durability and gives an impression of a
valuable material. Face frames and molding are also used as a substitute for
edge banding. Different materials used for edge banding include wood, acrylic,
PVC, melamine and ABS.
Traditionally, it was a manual process which required
ordinary carpentry tools and materials. In modern times, edge banding is
applied to the substance by using a hot melt adhesive. The process has now become
an automated process. The substrate primer is used as a bonding agent between
the hot melted adhesive and the substrate. Thicker edge banding requires a
slight concavity for a tight glue line which may vary from 0.018 inch to 5
millimeter. Edgebander is the machine used for edge banding. The work of the
machine is to trim the trailing edges, bonding the edge banding to the
substrate and buffing of the finished edges.
Edging tapes are used for concealing the edges. They contain a heat sensitive adhesive on their
backside which makes the work of applying hassle free. There are different
colours and different types of edging tape used for edge banding. Some of them
are Acryl 3D, ABS, ABS high gloss, Aluminium and Veneer sandwich edging.
